Sashiko: Visible Mending Workshop

In a world where we're surrounded by fast fashion, we challenge you to slow down, grab a piece of clothing you love that's just too 'loved' to wear, and stitch up its sad and sorry parts until it becomes a beautiful piece of art that's so unique there will never be another one like it.

Don't give up on your favorite pieces. Learn how to darn their rips and holes using embroidery thread and contrasting fabrics to create transformative, intricate, fabric-strengthening patterns.

The below is a collection of samples -- the shapes and styles below are inspired by traditional Sashiko and can absolutely be applied to clothing!

Supplies provided:

  • Embroidery thread (tons of colors to choose from)
  • Vintage and new fabric scraps
  • Darning needle

Skills learned:

  • Basic hand-sewing techniques
  • How to create stitch patterns
  • How to properly (and beautifully) reinforce clothing

Note: Bring clothing you'd like to mend or practice on vintage fabric samples like the ones shown above. If you choose to bring your own garments, cotton, wool, linen, hemp, and light denim are best, and please avoid the following:

  • Jersey-knit fabric
  • Delicate silk or similar material
  • Denim pieces with holes in the crotch or (if a jacket) armpit -- these can be really tricky spots and you may not get the same enjoyment out of the class
