Are you a creative entrepreneur?
I get this question all the time -- Why a store? Why open a store in the middle of an e-commerce culture? Why not save your money, work from home, and just do pop-ups?
Well, I want to do so much more than just make money selling handmade things. In fact, that's the furthest thing from my mine. Of course, money must be made to run a business, but the money part of that should be a by-product of all the other things.
I wanted to create a space that acted both as a high-end, private-feeling shopping experience where art and handmade lovers could come have a one-on-one experience where they would get to take their time trying on clothes in the fitting lounge, hear stories about the artists and makers, and perhaps even sign up for a DIY workshop.
The last thing I wanted was a hustle-and-bustle, turn-and-burn retail shop that's more about herding people to the register than making connections and building relationships.
And I wanted to fill a space like this with things I want to learn and talk about, made by people I've met or corresponded with, who are trying to do the exact thing I am -- lead a creatively fulfilling life working for myself, while encouraging slow fashion and contributing to a triple bottom-line economy.
S+B was created as an incubation space for makers and DIY instructors and almost daily I have conversations with folks on pricing, merchandising, marketing tactics, and workshop curricula. Sometimes it happens organically and sometimes it takes place in the form of a business consultation, but either way, nothing gives me more pleasure than helping folks refine this or that, here and there. Because it's the little steps that all build up to getting what you ultimately want from your venture.
And to that end, I've found myself spending lots of time sending emails with links to podcasts, sharing helpful posts from other creative entrepreneurs on Instagram via DM, and texting little nuggets I find throughout the day (and night).
So I thought, "Why don't I just streamline this ish and create a newsletter for all the creative peeps in my life so I can just compile all the great things I've found throughout the week and send them all at once in an email?" This was kind of happening for a minute in the form of my "Studio Talk" journal entries, but I realized the journal needed to focus on what's happening in the shop event / retail-wise and that I needed to find another way to share about entrepreneurial thoughts.
Well, I've created that email and the first one will be sent out Monday, April 16. Why Monday? Because my week out with a little creative inspiration and entrepreneurial motivation helps me keep important goals and milestones in mind.
